Punjab ends lockdown in Lahore as rain clears smog, cuts air pollution

Lahore,
Pakistan's second most populous city, has lifted a two-day lockdown imposed to tackle severe smog and air pollution. The decision came after heavy rain cleared the smog and improved air quality.

The lockdown was imposed on Friday, November 10, 2023, following a surge in smog that blanketed the city, causing respiratory problems for many residents. The city's air quality index (AQI) reached 400 on Friday, considered hazardous.

However, heavy rain overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning cleared the smog and significantly improved air quality. The AQI dropped to 120 on Saturday morning, considered moderate.

As a result of the improved air quality, authorities decided to lift the lockdown with immediate effect.

"The air quality has improved significantly due to the rain," said a spokesperson for the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). "The lockdown has been lifted, but we urge people to take precautions to protect themselves from air pollution."

Precautions to protect from air pollution

The EPA has advised people to wear masks when outdoors, avoid strenuous activities, and drink plenty of fluids.

The agency has also issued a number of recommendations for reducing air pollution, including:

  • Using public transportation instead of private vehicles
  • Carpooling
  • Avoiding the use of generators
  • Conserving energy
  • Planting trees

Lahore's smog problem

Lahore has been struggling with smog pollution for many years. The smog is caused by a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial emissions, and dust from construction sites.

The smog can have a serious impact on public health, causing respiratory problems, heart problems, and cancer.

The government has taken a number of steps to tackle the smog problem, including:

  • Implementing a vehicle emissions testing program
  • Banning the use of fossil fuels
  • Planting trees
  • Promoting the use of renewable energy

Conclusion

The lifting of the lockdown in Lahore is a welcome development for the city's residents. However, the government must continue to take measures to tackle the smog problem in order to protect public health.
