On November 9, 2023, surgeons at NYU Langone Health in New York City performed the world's first successful whole-eye transplant on a living person, Aaron James, a 46-year-old military veteran from Arkansas. James lost his left eye and part of his face in a work-related high-voltage electrical accident in 2021 . He underwent a 21-hour surgery to receive a whole-eye and partial face transplant from a deceased donor.
